Department of E.N.T


The Department of E.N.T trains undergraduates in the medical and postgraduates of MS and MDS courses. Operative procedures are conducted six days a week. Micro Otological surgeries, Micro Laryngoscopic surgeries, Endoscopic Sinus surgeries, Thyroidectomy, head and neck cancer surgeries etc., are performed apart from the routine ENT surgeries. A specialised sinus endoscopy clinic is conducted every Wednesday. The department also has a full fledged Audiology and Speech Pathology unit. The audiology section is actively involved in the evaluation and management of hearing impairment in adults and children. Predominant conditions seen are those of middle ear pathology, congenital hearing loss, presbyacusis, noise induced hearing loss etc. Patients are provided with rehabilitative facilities, and free hearing aids made available under the government scheme. The speech language pathology section is involved in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of children and adults with varying defects of speech and language. These defects involve conditions such as hearing loss, mental retardation, velopharyngeal insufficiencies etc. Therapeutic management of adults with fluency disorders, voice disorders, neurological conditions, etc. is also being undertaken.

  • Museum with 20 specimens and 48 charts,
  • Two way audio-visual communication from the OT for interaction between students and surgeons during surgery,
  • Departmental library, computer & a seminar hall where clinical seminars, journal clubs and case presentations are held
    regularly,Temporal bone dissection lab for cadaveric temporal bone dissection by the postgraduates and consultants.
  • Sound treated room with pure tone audiometer, impedance audiometer & OAE for assessment of hearing Equipment such as micro ear instruments, stroz nasal endoscopes, microdebrider, endoscopic instruments, microlaryngeal instruments, video laryngoscope, rigid esophagoscope, bronchoscope and LASER.


The department provides the following services:

  • Daily out-patient services are from Monday to Saturday (9 am – 1 pm & 2 pm – 4 pm)
  • In co-ordination with the departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology & Orthopaedics, special emphasis is given to the evaluation of patients who suffer from headache.
  • Patients with vertigo are evaluated on Monday from 2 pm – 4 pm apart from the routine OPD days. Patients with Menieres disease and BPPV constitute a significant number of vertigo patients in the OPD and are given counseling and treatment.
  • Nasal diseases like allergy & Polyps seen in the community are evaluated by diagnostic nasal endoscopy & functional endoscopic sinus surgery is offered to the patients.
  • Patients with tinitus, noise induced hearing loss are covered by a community project called “NISHABDA” where emphasis is given to diagnosis,treatment and counseling.
  • Music therapy is also offered for in-patients.
  • The department provides services such as diagnosis, management and rehabilitation with regard to cancer of the head & neck. The Laryngectomee Club which has been started, is affiliated to the  International Association of Laryngectomee, USA.
  • The Audiology and Speech Pathology section offers services six days a week and is equipped to deal with various kinds of deafness, speech and language defects.

The Department of OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY, K.S.Hegde Medical Academy organized a Two day live surgical workshop on Cosmetic correction of Ear and Nose- ”KSHEMA Oto – Rhinoplasty workshop” on 12th & 13th March 2011, at the seminar hall of K.S.Hegde Hospital, Deralakatte under the

leadership of Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary ,Vice Dean & Professor & Head Of The Department Of ENT. The Internationally renowned Rhinoplasty Surgeon Dr. Jung Dong Hak from seol, South Korea and Dr.. Ashish Bhumkar from Mumbai participated in this workshop as resource persons and demonstrated various surgical techniques through live surgery. About 100 delegates ( ENT Surgeons, Maxillofacial Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons) from South India Participated in this workshop.

  • Those staying in and around PHC areas (Bajal, Boliyar,

Natekal & Nitte) and patients referred from satellite centres are treated at concessional rates.

Department of OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY, KSHEMA Organized “South Zone ENT Undergraduate Quiz – 2011” on 12th June 2011 under the leadership of Dr.Sathish Kumar Bhandary, Vice Dean and HOD, ENT. Dr. Ranjith Rajan, Professor of ENT & Head & Neck Surgery from Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur conducted the quiz competition. 50 teams from 5 South Indian States participated in the competition. Team from Sri. Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences, Pondichery won the first Prize and Nijalingappa Medical College, Bagalkot won the Second prize. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dean, A.B Shetty, distributed prizes and trophies to the winners.
