Department of Anaesthesiology



Equipped to deliver comprehensive anaesthetic, resuscitatory and pain management services, it looks after a 20 bed multi-disciplinary ICU and 20 bed post surgical care unit, having state-of-the-art ventilators and monitors. It has a lecture hall with audio-visual facilities for teaching and mannequins for hands-on training in airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitations. The departmental library is stocked with over 150 books and periodicals and has a collection of training videos.


  • Anaesthetic services to all surgical specialities and super specialities like Cardiothoracic surgery, Paediatric surgery, Neuro surgery, Plastic surgery and Craniofacial surgery.
  • Sedation and Monitored Anaesthesia Care for patients undergoing dental procedures, CT scan, MRI and electroconvulsive therapy.
  • Resuscitation services.
  • Intensive Care Management of critically ill patients with invasive and non-invasive ventilatory, diagnostic, therapeutic and monitoring procedures-level 1 care.
  • Acute and chronic pain management including the out-patient pain clinic. It provides oral morphine and therapeutic modalities to patients with terminal malignancy. Therapeutic procedures for chronic pain are also undertaken.

  • Live demonstration of Ultrasound guided Nerve Blocks. Dr. Mohamed Bilal from Saudi Arabia was the resource person on 12th April 2008.
  • A two day training programme on ‘Basic Life Support, Trauma & Emergency’ for nursing staff from 1st to 2nd July 2008.
  • Hands-on workshop on ‘Difficult Airway Management’ as a part of SZ-ISACON on 18th September 2008.
  • Workshop on ‘Emergency Toxicology Life Support’ with faculty from AIIMS and University of South Florida on 9th October 2008.

  • A structured course on ‘Fiberoptic Airway Management Course’ (KSHEMA-FAMC) has been started for the department. Duration 4-6 days, every 3 months.

Awards won by the students of the Department of Anaesthesiology:

Dr Nithya C.A, Post graduate, department of  anaesthesiology & critical care won 3rd prize for the poster  titled ‘Post operative Pain Relief for Palatoplasty – Is Nerve Block Better Than Opioids? Authored by Dr. Manjunath Kamath, Dr. Sripada G Mehandale, Dr. Gayathri Bhat Dr. Raveendra U.S,   at 2nd National Conference on ‘Paediatric Anaesthesia’ held in Bangalore from 20th to 22nd February 2010.

Dr Pshpa Priyadarshini and Dr Kaushik Rao, 3rd and 2nd year Post graduate students respectively, of  Department of  Anaesthesiology & Critical Care have won 1st prize in the, 8th annual Vijayanagara PG Quiz Contest (Karnataka State level) held during the PG Excel 2011 at JJM Medical College, Davanagere on 25th September 2011.
