K. S. Hegde Medical Academy established in 1999 has been imparting graduate (MBBS), Bachelor of Science in (MIT and OTT) and post graduate (MD/ MS) education and training in medical sciences and health science technology.

K. S. Hegde Medical Academy started Bachelor of Science in Operation Theatre Technology in the academic year 2008 which was affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

Hegde Medical Academy becoming a constituent college of Nitte Deemed to be University from 2009, the Bachelor of Science in Operation Theatre Technology (B. Sc. OTT) has also come under the purview of the university. With the effect from the academic year 2014-15, regulations and course nomenclature are formulated as Bachelor of Science in Anaesthesia & Operation Theatre Technology.



A candidate seeking admission to the Bachelor of Science degree in Anaesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology shall have studied English as one of the principal subjects during the tenure of the course must have passed:

  • Two year Pre University examination of the government of Karnataka, with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as principal subjects of study with 40% of average marks in the aggregate of these subjects.


  • Pre –degree course from a recognized university considered as equivalent by Nitte University, (two years after ten years of schooling) with physics, chemistry and biology as principal subjects of study with 40% of average marks in the aggregate of these subjects.


  • Any equivalent examination recognized by the Nitte University for the above purpose with physics, chemistry and biology as principal subjects of study with 40% of average marks in the aggregate of these subjects.

Duration of the course:

The Candidate shall undergo a period of study extending over 3 academic years followed by 6 months compulsory rotatory Internship.

  • The Operation, Theatre technician mainly assists the Anaesthesiologist and Surgeons in preparing and managing the patient for surgery during pre-operative, operative and post-operative periods.

  • He is required to keep all the anaesthesia and surgical equipments as well as drugs ready as and when required by anaesthesiologists and surgeons. Maintaining anaesthesia records is also the responsibility of the technicians.

  • The OT equipments like anaesthesia machine, diathermy, endoscopic / laparoscopic (key hole abdominal surgery)/ arthroscopic (key hole joint surgery) equipments are also under direct care of technicians.


Career prospects:

  • Technical assistant in OT for all surgical specialties including general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, OBG, etc.

Learning Objectives:

  • Prepare the operation theatre, load and label requested drugs, gather and assemble the surgical equipment for proposed general surgical procedure as per the complexity and duration.

  • Prepare the operation theatre, transport patients, assist in anaesthetizing, monitoring, carrying out different procedures, recovery and postoperative care, with basic knowledge of pathophysiology and overall idea about surgical procedures of patients undergoing sub speciality surgeries like urology, cardiothoracic, neuro surgeries, paediatric etc.

  • Understand the anxiety of patient in preoperative state and appropriately assist to shift, induce anaesthesia and position patient for surgical procedure.

  • Help consultant in emergency department while receiving acutely ill patients, stabilize them and transport in or out of hospital as per the individual needs.

  • Organise drugs, equipment and monitors for procedures outside operation theatre including endoscopies, imaging, electroconvulsive therapy and transport etc. and monitor through the procedure.

  • Work as a member of rescue / code blue team in recognising cardiac arrest and participate in revival cum cardiopulmonary resuscitation inside and outside hospital.

  • Understand the complexity of condition of critically ill patients and their relatives, manage the overall upkeep of the equipment used in intensive care unit and transport of critically ill patients and assist the specialist in resuscitation, management and transfer of such patients with appropriate paraphernalia.

  • Assist consultant and postgraduate students to carry out research work, with basic knowledge of research methodology and statistics.

  • Contribute in planning, setting up, commissioning, maintaining and managing operation theatre, emergency departments, intensive care unit, Cathlab and emergency response services as a team member.

  • Upgrade the professional acumen by periodically attending continued education programmes and applying the same in routine patient care and professional advancement.
