DEPARTMENT OF ANAESTHESIOLOGY & CRITICAL CARE

Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care provides anaesthetic services to all surgical specialities of Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital and A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences and also takes care of critically ill patients. These include General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Head & Neck, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and super specialities like Neurosurgery, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Craniofacial and Onco Surgeries. Department is in charge of 20 bedded multi disciplinary Intensive Care Unit and a 16 bedded high dependence unit. The Department is actively involved in the acute and chronic pain relief services. The department runs a regular pain clinic, it has an outpatient pre anaesthesia clinic for evaluation and preparation of surgical patients for both outpatient and in-patient procedures, and a labour analgesia unit to take care of labour pain during childbirth. Outside the operation theatre, the department caters to the needs of other departments like radiological procedures and endoscopic procedures, ECT etc.

The department is involved in teaching undergraduate students of MBBS, BDS, Nursing (Diploma and BSc) and physiotherapy. The department also imparts training to postgraduate residents leading to MD in Anaesthesiology. Further, postgraduate students of other specialities like MDS (Oral surgery, Pedodontics), MD Medicine, MS general surgery and Orthopaedics, MSc nursing etc., undergo regular training in the department. Department also runs a B Sc Anaesthesia and OT Technology course and a Add -on course in Critical Care for MSc nursing students.

Over and above, the department is actively involved in promoting the dissemination of knowledge and skill among fellow anaesthesiologists by conducting various academic programmes like CME and workshops at national and local levels. Department is actively involved in CPR training for all doctors as well as other concerned field workers including awareness about medical emergencies and first aid. More over for general public, department offers training in first aid and CPR for public on regular basis.

Academic Events (2016-17 onwards)
a. The Department of Anaesthesiology organised a 2 day State level CME programme on paediatric anaesthesia “KSHEMA PACE – 2016” on 9th & 10th July 2016 at K S Hegde Medical Academy, Deralakatte, Managaluru. Total 100 delegates from all over the state participated in the event and enriched their knowledge. 14 faculty members of national level experienced in the field of paediatric anaesthesia have delivered the lectures.

b. Organised a CME on neuroanaesthesia- “Neuro Update 2017” on 30th July 2017 at K S Hegde Medical Academy, Deralakatte, Managaluru. Dr Stanlies D’Souza, Assistant Professor of Anaesthesiology and Division Chief of Neuroanaesthesiology in University of Massachusetts Medical School Springfield, USA was the main person.

c. Organised a live demonstration on application of ultra sound for airway assessment, focused assessment with sonography in trauma (FAST), transthoracic echocardiography in emergency room on 30th July 2017. Dr Umesh G, Professor of Anaesthesiology, DIMHANS, Dharwad was the resource person. More than 60 PGs and faculty of KSHEMA and other colleges participated.

d. A first aid training programme was conducted for the students of Karnataka Polytechnic College, Mangaluru during their NSS camp on 01.01.2016. Prof Dr Sripada G Mehandale and Dr Anath Srikrishna Somayajji of Department of Anesthesiology K. S Hegde Medical Academy were the resource persons. About 50 students of KPT from different departments participated in the training programme. The camp was held at Rajiv Gandhi Academy of Political Science, Padubidri.

e. Scout and guides trainers underwent CPR and first aid training on 15.04.2016 at Skill Lab, KSHEMA as a part of Ambulance badge camp at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayath Model Higher Primary School, Naringana. Dr Sripada G Mehandale and Dr Sumalatha R Shetty, Professor, Department of Anaesthesiology, rendered the training to the cadets from Mangaluru North, Mangaluru South and Bantwal Taluk.

f. A month long ‘KSHEMA Nitte CPR campaign’ was conducted by K S Hegde Medical Academy and Nitte University at Nitte NMAIT campus from September 3rd to October 4th 2016. Department of anaesthesiology took the lead role with Dr Sripada G Mehandale, Dr Gayathri Bhat, Dr Sumalatha R Shetty and Dr Anand Bangera being the main resource persons. 5244 students of Nitte campus were trained in CPR (Cardio pulmonary resuscitation). A CPR competition for students was held on that occasion along with the a role play on the importance of learning CPR. The valedictory function was held on from September 3rd to October 4th2016 and Mr N V Hegde was chief guest.

g. Organised a training programme on ‘Medical Emergencies in dental practice and CPR’ for members of Indian Dental Association, Kasargod on 08.01.2017 at IMA hall, Kasargod. 48 IDA members were certified in ‘KASHEMA BLS’. Dr Anand Bangera, Professor and HOD of Anaesthesiology, Dr Sripada G Mehandale, Professor of anaesthesiology along with our department postgraduates Dr Sudham Shetty and Dr Anwar H were the resource persons.

h. Under the aegis of D K district administration, Indian Red Cross Society, Kudla Souharda Sahakari (R) and other agencies, Dr Sripada G Mehandale, Dr Sumalatha R Shetty from Anaesthesiology department imparted training to members of Dakshina Kannada Auto rickshaw Drivers Association on Saturday, 4th February 2017 at Radhakrishna Mandira, Urva. About 50 auto rickshaw drivers from Mangalore benefited from this workshop.

i. First aid and CPR training conducted for the teaching and non teaching staff of St Sebastian High School, Permannur, Thokkotu, Mangalore on Tuesday 15th July 2017. Dr Sripada G Mehandale, Professor of Anaesthesiology along with Dr Anisha, Dr Lee Hui Ling and Dr Madhav Pai imparted training. Head mistress Sister Anita Natasha welcomed the gathering.. More than 35 teachers participated in the hands on training.

Awards and Achievements (2016-17 onwards)
1. Dr Kavya Prabhu M, won First place in Vijayanagara PG Quiz, a state level annual quiz programme for post graduate students, sponsored by Bellary City Branch of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists. She secured prize facing stiff competition from more than 350 post graduate students, during PG EXCEL 2016 at Mysore Medical College and Research Institute, Mysuru, on 13th & 14th February 2016.

2. Dr Bedekar Vinit Vinod, won First place in short Case Presentation competition for post graduate students, sponsored by Mangaluru City Branch of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists. During CEOT MANGALURU (Comprehensive exam oriented tutorial for anaesthesia post graduate student) on 31st January 2016 at Yenepoya Medical College Mangaluru.

3. Dr Viraj G R Shetty won 2nd prize in state level Vijayanagara PG quiz sponsored by ISA Ballari City Branch during PG EXCEL 2017 (Annual PG Exam preparation programme of ISA Karnataka) held on 12th February 2017 at Al – Ameen Medical College, Vijayapura.
