DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY

The department of Medical Laboratory Technology established in 1998 was affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences under the banner of Nitte Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences. This course offered under graduate and master’s program in the field of laboratory medicine.
  • From the academic year 2014-15, this was integrated with K.S. Hegde Medical Academy Allied Health Sciences along with B.Sc.MIT, B.Sc.A&OTT.
Duration: Three and half years including six months of compulsory rotating internship.

  • From the academic year 2018-19 the college has intended to start the master’s programme Haematology & Blood Transfusion which extends for a period of two years.

Medium of instruction: English
The under graduate students will undergo training in fundamental aspects of Anatomy and Physiology & deeper aspects of Pathology, Microbiology and Biochemistry which mainly deals with diagnosis & prognosis of diseases by analyzing specimens taken from the patient.

Students will learn all the principles, procedures and interpretation of a wide variety of tests done in clinical lab.

Pattern of the course: Annual
K.S. Hegde Medical Academy has an excellent infrastructure with 1200 bedded Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital and Cancer Research Centre.

Teaching:
Our laboratories are well equipped with blood auto analyzers, automated and manual ELISA machines, fully automated biochemical analyzer, apart from a host of all other equipment’s in all the departments.

It introduces students to emerging technologies, procedures and equipment’s as applicable to the health care sector today.

Students spend a considerable part of their learning time in K. S Hegde hospital set up, where they are exposed to actualhands on” practical training.

Teaching is well supported by highly qualified experts of Medical College. Thus they provide better integration of clinical and theoretical skills to mould the student into a finer professional and also to help him pace with current trends in the profession.

Student monitoring system: we have introduced several unique methods to help students to learn. This include structured learning, mind map techniques, seminars, targeted studying with self & peer evaluation.

These methods have helped a lot in making learning easy for all students. The students are continuously monitored by teachers for their attendance (Chaithanya) marks, discipline & reports are sent to parents regularly. This teacher guardian system of monitoring is unique at our department.

Academic events:
Students regularly participate in camps conducted by department of community medicine, malarial camp, blood bank camps etc.

Sports

CME:
Department of Microbiology in collaboration with department of Medical Laboratory Technology organized continuing medical education program onGuidelines for better Laboratory Practices” & Hands on training inBest Practices of Phlebotomy Techniques & Biomedical Waste Management” held on 31 August 2017 at K.S. Hegde Medical Academy.

31 students of first year B.Sc. MLT students attended the CME organized by Department of Microbiology in collaboration with Department of Medical Laboratory Technology, where they underwent an intensive hands on training at the skill lab and Bio-Medical Waste Management.

NSS:
The students regularly participate in various programs like – Swacch Bharath, Vanamahostava, Children’s Day.

Achievements:
On 2nd December 2017, twenty one students of third year B.Sc. MLT participated in CME (TRANSCME 2017-Evidence Based Transfusion Medicine) organized by Father Muller Medical College, Mangaluru. The student Ms. Sabiya Sahani won 2nd place in the quiz competition conducted by them.

Won first place in Inter-kshema football tournament held in K.S. Hegde Medical Academy on 2nd March 2017.

Won second place in “2nd South Zone - Allied Health Sports Volley ball tournament”conducted by School of Allied Health Sciences, Manipal during 2nd to 4th November 2017.

Career prospects
Well-trained technologists with strong scientific foundation make medical technology a challenging & rewarding career.

The demand for professionals who can provide diagnostic service has been growing at a much faster pace than the number being trained every year. Several prestigious hospitals prefer our students.

Graduates can pick up global carrier in medical technology industry, laboratory equipment companies, diagnostic centers & services, blood banks, academic institutes, research & development centers, entrepreneurship etc.
