DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the teaching Hospital of K.S Hegde Medical Academy, is well ventilated, has natural lighting and well equipped to provide women with comprehensive health care ranging from antenatal and postnatal care, general gynaecology, infertility services, cancer screening for gynaecological oncology and family planning services. It has adequate demonstration rooms, lecture halls with audio visual aids, museum, well equipped labour theatre and a library. The department trains students at the undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as students of paramedical courses like Physiotherapy and Nursing.

The KSHEMA IVF lab is located in a spacious, well equipped and ventilated hall in the second floor of the hospital adjacent to the skill lab.

Specialised work/procedures:
  • Antenatal Clinic: High risk pregnancy care, management of bad obstetric history cases
  • Family Planning Program: Counselling, distribution of oral contraceptives, condoms and IUCD insertion for free of cost, tubal sterilization both minilap and laparoscopy.
  • In-patient and Labour and Delivery Area (Birthing Center) Well-equipped Air conditioned Labour Theatres (4 beds) with adult and fetal monitors, portable ultrasound machine, eclampsia room, where eclampsia patients are managed.

    We have painless Labour Clinic in association with the department of Anaesthesia and other labour analgesia are available.

    Common High dependency unit (HDU), closed ICU and Newborn care areas (NICU) with 6 beds Ante-partum and post-partum observation rooms with special high risk pregnancy ward (6 beds).

    Labour Theatre O.T: We have operation theatre adjacent to labour theatre where caesarean sections are done.

    General Gynaecology: outpatient consultation for common gynaecological problems and complex disorders where experienced faculty provide quality care. All gynaecological procedures including endoscopic gynaecological procedures like operative laparoscopy (lap assisted vaginal hysterectomy, total lap hysterectomy, laparoscopic cystectomy, adhesiolysis, hysteroscopy etc) are performed in well equipped operating theatres.
  • Diagnostic and Operative Hysteroscopy: carried out to diagnose and treat abnormal uterine bleeding, missing IUCD etc.
  • Cancer screening: Pap smear for cervical cancer, colposcope for the diagnosis of pre-invasive and invasive cancer of the cervix, mammogram for breast cancer, outpatient endometrial biopsies facilities are also available.
  • Menopausal clinic: Complete evaluation and counselling of women who are nearing menopause or menopausal, including hormone replacement therapy is provided in our department.
  • KSHEMA IVF-Fertility & Reproductive Medicine Centre:KSHEMA IVF has a floor area of approximately 2,500sq.ft. Comprehensive fertility care under one roof including initial evaluation, counseling, ultrasound, semen analysis, artificial insemination with husband's semen, donor semen (intrauterine insemination), IVF/ICSI, cryopreservation of embryos and gametes, egg donation/sharing etc. Facilities for ovulatory studies, diagnostic / operative laparoscopic and facilities for evaluation of the male partner.
  • Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC):
  • Located in the out-patient wing, the centre offers pre and post-test counselling and free HIV spot tests. This serves in the reduction of mother to child transmission of HIV Emergency care is provided by the in-hospital consultants on a 24 hr basis. The out-patient section has the following subspecialty clinics in addition to the antenatal and gynaec services:
    • Antenatal clinic: On all days
    • Postnatal clinic: On all days
    • MTP clinic: Wednesday & Thursday
    • Cancer Screening & Counselling: Monday, Wednesday & Friday
    • Infertility clinic: On all days
    • Family planning clinic: Monday, Tuesday, Friday & Saturday
    • Menopausal clinic: Wednesday & Saturday.
    • In patient: The in-patient department includes 5 wards, with 90 beds.

    • Services:
      Schemes: Natekal camp card and Sevanjali card issued to the camp patients where all antenatal investigations and ultrasound are made totally free. All normal deliveries, Caesarean sections including medicines are made free. Sterilisation immediately after delivery are made free.

      ACADEMIC EVENTS (2016-2017)
      • The department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology has conducted a Fetal Medicine CME 2016 FETUS THE PATIENT on 10.09.2016.
      • The department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology has conducted CME on "INFERTILITY IN EVERYDAY PRACTICE" in the month of May 2017.

      TEACHING-LEARNING ACTIVITIES
      Under graduate: 4th & 5th semester students have tutorial classes taken by staff and senior Postgraduates. The schedule for 1 month is put up and is followed.

      6th term:
      students have family planning postings for which the schedule for 2 weeks is planned and the staff are assigned for each class. At the end of 2 weeks the end postings are taken to assess their knowledge. 6th termers also have 4weeks of clinical postings in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and evening L.T postings from 4.00pm to 7.00pm. During this period, they have bed side clinics, case discussions. OPD Postings: On OPD days the students are taught and shown OP procedures with the help of patients.

      7th Term:
      only theory classes are taken, as they have other clinical postings.

      8th Term & 9th term
      students are posted for clinical postings and evening L.T postings (4.00pm to 7.00pm) for 4 weeks & 6 weeks respectively. During this period, they have bedside clinics, case discussions and OP postings from 10.30 a.m to 1.00 p.m, which is taken by staff. In the afternoon, 4 days a week they have small group teaching between 2.00 p.m to 4.00 p.m. Small group teaching is focused on group discussions moderated by faculty members. They are posted in L.T during this period where they have to observe 10 deliveries and to be entered in their record book.

      Skill Lab Postings:
      Undergraduate students of all terms have been allotted skill lab postings where small groups of students are given training using Lucina & the other modules for activities such as, antenatal examination, gynaecological examination, pap smear, mechanism of normal and abnormal labour, breech delivery and female catheterisation, etc.

      Internal Assessment:
      At the end of every clinical posting, they have end postings where students are made to present a case, questions are asked pertaining to the case and marks are given. Final year students have 3 Sessional exams, which are included in the Internal Assessment.

      Post Graduate:
      Postgraduates: Course plan is made for Postgraduates for a period of 3 years. They have to work in the wards as well as O.P & OT. PGs are given IVF posting on rotation where they are trained in various aspects of Infertility. Each PG is given a unit, they work approximately one year in each unit and they have Labour room postings for 6 months during their course. PGs have peripheral postings on rotation, where a PG is posted for 1 month in NICU, Radiology and 2 weeks in Radiotherapy. Post graduate students have also been allotted skills lab postings for learning the mechanism of labour of both normal and abnormal labour & various obstetric emergency drills like eclampsia, shoulder dystocia & post partum haemorrhage drills to make them better prepared for emergencies in labour room. They are also taught in the basics of ultrasound in pregnancy & laparoscopy by using ultrasound laparoscopy simulators. PGs have 3 days a week teaching programme which include Journal club, Case Presentation, Seminars, Perinatal Mortality Meeting in coordination with the department of Paediatrics, Caesarean and Hysterectomy audits once a month. PGs have yearly Theory, Practical and Viva Voce exam, to make them prepare for final year exam. PGs are also encouraged to attend and participate in CME, State & National conferences, Quiz, Workshops in which they are made to present posters to publish interesting case reports and are also encouraged to publish original research articles in reputed subject journals with good impact factors. They are also encouraged to take up research along with their dissertation.
