The Department of Pathology trains the Undergraduates in Medical, Dental, Laboratory Medicine, Physiotherapy and Nursing streams as well as Post graduates of medical, dental and laboratory medicine. The department provides round-the clock laboratory and blood bank services to both out-patients and in- patients. There are four separate sections in the laboratory - Histopathology & Immunohistochemistry, Hematology, Cytology and Clinical pathology – each under supervision of qualified pathologists on rotation.

The pathologists are assisted by well qualified technical staff. The sections are well equipped with necessary and sophisticated instruments like the Automated Cell counter, Coagulometer, Automatic Tissue Processor, Microtomes. Microwave oven, Monocular, Binocular, Trinocular and Pentahead Microscopes with CCTV, Phase contrast, dark field and Photomicrography facilities and Computers for storing data. The laboratory reports are dispatched to respective wards and OP clinics at 9.15am, 12 noon and 3 pm to reduce inconvenience to the patients. The department also extends routine laboratory services for regular health check-up camps conducted by our hospital. There is also a blood bank which is located in the hospital, with an exclusive area of 2500 sqft, with 12 rooms including component seperation room. The blood bank contains equipmenst like Refrigerated centrifuge - component separator, Platelet Agitator, -85° C ultra low freezer, -40° C plasma freezer for storing single donor plasma, Blood Bag Refrigerators, Laminar Flow, Cryobath, Micro plate Washer/ Reader, Blood collection monitor . The blood bank offers round the clock service to deliver excellent and efficient patient care. There is a regular blood donation camp,in association with service organisations. There is an exclusive voluntary blood donor registry by name “Sanjeevini” which contains all the details of the eligible blood donors.

The Department currently has 23 ongoing research projects, 26 completed research projects and 81 Publications in last 3 years.

Awards & Achievements
1. Dr. Jayaprakash Shetty K, has been appointed to the foundation steering committee member of India of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics Unit at Nitte University on 28th November 2016 to fulfil the objectives of stimulating, teaching and research in Bioethics in Medical and Health Science Education.

2. Dr. Anitha Chakravarthy - Postgraduate student of Department of Pathology, won the second prize for the poster on the topic “The impact of Malaria on the neglected ailing tissue – a case control study” at 43rd Annual State Conference of KC-Indian Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists “KAPCON 2016” held at SDM college of Medical Sciences & Hospital, Dharwad from 26th to 28th August 2016.

3. Dr. Gayathri J - Postgraduate student of Dept. of Pathology, was awarded as “Best Presenter” in the slide Seminar conducted by KC-Indian Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists at Anand Diagnostics, Bangalore on 18-2-17.

4. Dr. Aashish Sharma, presented & won the I Prize for the Poster titled “An unusual cause of gluteal mass: Metastatic Hepatocellular Carcinoma” during the CME, Pathology Update 2017, held on 14th May 2017 at KMC, Manipal.
