Department of Public Health was established in the year 2013 as a constituent department under K S Hegde Medical Academy. The department is comprised of dynamic public health professionals having diversified experiences with UN agencies like UNICEF, WHO; state and federal health systems and third sector as faculties. Department is offering a two years full time Master of Public Health (MPH) program which provides teaching, research and hands-on experience that prepare students, health science practitioners and researchers to develop and apply public health interventions for their fellow citizens. The program provides students with a strong foundation in epidemiology and biostatistics complimented by research methodology and behavioral sciences.
Master of Public Health (MPH) programme with us is an interdisciplinary post-graduate program spread over four semesters including four months field research (dissertation) and two months of internship in a health and development agencies recognised by the university. Through a well-integrated field oriented program guided by experienced faculty, students receive instruction in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental Health, Nutrition, Social & Behavioural Sciences, Health Promotion, Health Informatics, Health System Planning & Management, Project Management, Health Economics etc. In compliance with the University Grants Commission, Department is currently considering to impart MPH programme under choice based credit system. Skill based certificate and diploma programme as well as doctoral courses at the department are also under process.

- Study Tour/Conference participation: Department promotes student study tour as well as paper presentation at national and international forums with mentored support.
- Collaboration: University has provided opportunities for students to attend US Public health Schools as a part of Student Exchange Programme. Selected students will be sent University of Minnesota, School of Public Health with academic scholarships.
- Field Exposure: The department is managing a network of 18 comprehensive rural health centres along the coastal areas of Karnataka and Kerala for field study on medical, psychiatric and dental health services. A dedicated air conditioned vehicle for monitoring peripheral rural health activities is also available. Community health services are being imparted regularly through these health centres.
- Laboratory: Well-equipped laboratories devised to impart practical training to students in public health, health informatics, statistics, behavioural science and other modules in the campus as well as in the field. A 1200 bedded hospital with super speciality departments is well equipped to do research in clinical epidemiology and other public health issues. A separate centre for treatment of Cancer and a Centre for animal experimentation also attached with the institute.

Currently department is focused on research in the field of Maternal and Child Health, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) risk factors (Tobacco, Obesity, Diabetes, Alcohol and Hypertension), cancer screening, health promotion including school health programme and health systems.

What is Public Health & MPH?
Public health refers to all organized measures (whether public or private) to prevent disease, promote health and prolong life among the population as a whole. Its activities aim to provide conditions in which people can be healthy and focus on entire populations, not on individual patients or diseases.
The MPH is a demanding, interdisciplinary program required across the globe and focuses on active, student-directed learning, problem solving, and acquiring the skills essential for efficient public health practice. MPH students bring a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences to the program as they come from different geographical locations and educational and professional background.
Scope of the Program
This program aims to impart international quality education in public health to create a cadre of public health professionals for delivering better health care and development. There is an increasing demand for public health professionals in Government organizations, national and international non-Government Organizations, United Nation organization and its agencies like WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, UNOPS, UN WOMEN, FAO etc. and private sector organizations and in the field of research. This program will help in bridging the gaps in Public Health research and training.
Government of India has highlighted in the National Health Policy 2002 that a large number of specialists should be trained in Public Health. World Health Organization has also emphasized the need for establishing a workforce with public health training and research. As public health professionals must act as linking pins between theory and practice, between research and policy, they must be able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of other professionals and experts from academia, bureaucracies and service organization in health and development. Therefore the MPH Program is designed to align the objectives around United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals related with public health and development with a strong foundation in core subjects such as epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioral sciences, health system and policy, management, environmental and occupational health including public health research and other subjects.

As an educator with a degree in public health one can develop and implement interventions designed to improve
MPH degree is 60 credits semester based full time course including submission of dissertation on the topic registered and will be of 24 months (4 semesters). First three semesters will be of full time on-campus course and in the final semester first four months for conducting dissertation activities (data collection, data entry, analysis, report writing and submission for evaluation) including final submissions and rest of the two months for internship from any health/development agencies recognized by the university.

Annual intake of students for the academic year 2016-17 will be 20 seats. University reserves 80 % of the seats for Indian students; rest will be for overseas students preferably from developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America
