Department of Anaesthesiology

Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care medicine at K.S Hegde Medical Academy is committed in providing quality perioperative anaesthetic care to all surgical fields including super speciality, endoscopy, radiology suits, emergency services and providing critical care service in ICU round the clock. The Department runs 20 bedded multidisciplinary intensive care unit, a preoperative assessment clinic, post-operative care unit and pain clinic. The Department aims to set high standards in patient care and medical education with well equipped modern facilities such as state of the art anaesthesia work stations, monitoring devices, ultrasound and ventilators. The Department engages in teaching MBBS, MD Anaesthesiology courses, BDS, Nursing, as well as, runs BSc AOTT and MSc AOTT courses. The Department disseminates knowledge and skill by conducting various academic programmes like conferences, CME and workshops at national and local levels. With actively involving in human simulator and skill development lab, the Department regularly conducts CPR training for medical, paramedical personnel and the general public. The Department is a recognised training centre for difficult airway management and has hands- on- training programme in fibre-optic intubation.

Research Thrust Areas:

The Department has special interest in the field of difficult airway management, ultrasound guided nerve blocks and pain management. The Department has made large contribution in forming the difficult airway guidelines framed by the All India Difficult Airway Association.

Services Provided:

  • Anaesthesia for surgical fields like general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, otorhinolaryngology, craniofacial surgery, paediatrics, plastic surgery, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery; outside the operation theatre complex like infertility centre, gastroenterology suite, in radiological procedures and ECT
  • Intensive care for critically ill patient
  • Emergency services in emergency department (casualty)
  • Pre anaesthetic assessment

  • Social responsibility in time of management of disasters

12. 18th April 2010 One day CME on ‘Shock’ was conducted by the Department of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care. The event was inaugurated by Prof (Dr) M Shantharam Shetty, Vice Chancellor. Programme was attended more than 100 delegators.
13. 20th& 21st November 2010 First National Difficult Airway Conference (NDACON 2010) and KSHEMA Anaesthesia update at the medical sciences complex, KSHEMA. This was the 4thnational level programme organized by the department.
14. 26th to 28th August 2011. Difficult Airway Workshop 9th Congress of SAARC Association of Anaesthesiologists Pre-conference workshop on ‘Difficult Airway Management’ held at Victoria Hospital, Bengaluru

19. 24th July 2015 Dr Mogera Chandra, Consultant Anaesthetist & Clinical Director, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, London visited the department of Anaesthesiology .He conducted hands-on demonstration of Ultrasound guided regional blocks for upper limb surgeries
20. 9th& 10th July 2016 2 day State level CME programme on paediatric anaesthesia “KSHEMA PACE – 2016” at K S Hegde Medical Academy, Deralakatte, Managaluru. Total 100 delegates from all over the state participated in the event and enriched their knowledge. 14 faculty members of national level experienced in the field of paediatric anaesthesia have delivered the lectures
21. 30th July 2017 CME on neuroanaesthesia- “Neuro Update 2017” at K S Hegde Medical Academy, Deralakatte, Managaluru. Dr Stanlies D’Souza, Assistant Professor of Anaesthesiology and Division Chief of Neuroanaesthesiology in University of Massachusetts Medical School Springfield, USA was the main person.
22. 30th July 2017. Live demonstration on application of ultra sound for airway assessment, focused assessment with sonography in trauma (FAST), transthoracic echocardiography in emergency room on Dr Umesh G, Professor of Anaesthesiology,DIMHANS, Dharwad was the resource person. More than 60 PGs and faculty of KSHEMA and other colleges participated.
23. 24, 25th February 2018 ‘Comprehensive Exam Orientated Tutorial (CEOT-3)’ at the Seminar Hall of K S Hegde Hospital. It was organised by Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, K S Hegde Medical Academy of Nitte Deemed to be University under the agies of Indian Society of Anaesthesiology Karnataka State Branch.
24. 13th January 2019 Conducted a Conference on Recent trends in Critical Care Medicine titled “KSHEMA CRITICARE 2019” at K S Hegde Hospital on Sunday
