DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL MEDICINE


The Department of Internal Medicine is managed by an excellent and competent team of doctors who are dedicated in providing patient-centred, evidence-based medical care. The goal is to improve health of our society through basic biomedical research and clinical investigation, comprehensive and personalized patient care at affordable costs and the training of the next generation of specialist physicians.


The department currently consists of 63 staff members with 7 Professors, 3 Associate professors, 12 Assistant professors, 7 Senior residents and 36 Junior residents divided into 5 units. It offers MBBS and MD courses and participates in the training for various courses like BDS, MDS, BPT, MPT, B.Sc. (Nursing), M.Sc.(Nursing), B.Sc. OT, MLT, Imaging technology and interdisciplinary PhD courses.


Teaching facilities include a seminar hall with a seating capacity of 40, lecture halls with audio-visual aids, demonstration rooms, an internet cafe and a departmental library with over 200 medical books. There is also a Skill Lab meant for training the undergraduates in honing basic skills of patient management and in handling emergencies. All staff and postgraduates also have access to the college net facilities on their hand held smartphones with access to online material like Up-to-date and Clinical key for access to latest updated information regarding evaluation and treatment protocols. Faculty and students have access to the central research laboratory of the University which is well equipped for major biomedical research.


Services:

The Medicine team is divided into 5 units each unit conducting OPD on separate days with Saturday and Sunday OPDs being conducted on a rotation basis. Out Patient Department has 10 Clinical examination rooms, 2 examination cubicles for UGs, Clinical teaching rooms and one procedure room.

Inpatient services include 150 bedded ward, a well equipped intensive care unit (40 beds, 12 dedicated for Gen Med) Pulmonary Medicine (4beds) Neuro ICU (8beds) Renal ICU ( 6beds )with monitors, ventilators, pulseoxymeter, blood gas analysis etc.


Recently our hospital has also become a ICTC centre for the treatment of HIV.

Specialty clinics such as Cardiology clinic, Neurology Clinic, Pulmonology clinic, Nephrology Clinic, Endocrinology clinic, Gastroenterology clinic, Diabetes clinic, Hypertension clinic, Geriatric clinic, HIV counseling clinic and Oncology clinic, provide the tertiary care services to patients at affordable costs. They run independent outpatient clinics and are actively involved in academic activities in the department of medicine.

 

The department conducts health camps on:

  • 1st & 3rd Tuesday camp at B.C.Road

  • 2nd & 4th Tuesday camp at Farangipet

  • Thursday camp at Nitte

  • Saturday camp at Thalipady

  • Camps at Natekal, Odiyur, Boliyar and Alake

Under the Nerekere Scheme, a majority of the investigations and treatment for patients from camps are conducted free of cost.About 10,000 patients have benefited from more than 30 general health camps in remote villages in collaboration with Rotary, Lions Club and other NGOs.

In all about 16 rural centers have been established ,14 of which are attached to the medical college and provide free secondary / tertiary level treatment to the rural community with over 50000 patients being treated annually. Specialist staff provide consultancy in these rural centers regularly. Interns & P.G s are posted for training.


Speciality services:

Speciality services such as cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, nephrology, gastroenterology, endocrinology and Oncology have specialist consultants are equiped with state of the art Cath Lab, TMT , Holter monitoring, Echocardiography, Endoscopy units, Dialysis unit , EEG, EMG / Nerve conduction / evoked potentials, Bronchoscopy, PFT and sleep lab.
