The Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy at K.S. Hegde Medical Academy was established in the year 1999 and offers comprehensive teaching facilities for postgraduate and undergraduate courses run by Nitte (Deemed to be University). The Department consists of dedicated staff & enthusiastic residents catering to the needs of the patients with utmost care & compassion. Our focus is to develop the Department as a centre of excellence, imparting quality education, generating competent, skilled and humane manpower to face the variety of challenges with a high degree of credibility, integrity, ethical standards and social concern.

Research Thrust Areas

The Department is actively involved in research activities and encourages residents to be a part of such research. Major thrust areas in which research is being undertaken by the Department include Psoriasis, Dermatophytosis and Vitiligo.

Department has received funding from ICMR for a PG dissertation titled “A CASE-CONTROL STUDY OF ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA AND CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS IN MEN”. The Department has received research grants from NITTE (Deemed to be University) for research proposals.

Services

The Department offers outpatient and inpatient services connected to Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy.

Outpatient Department:

Outpatient Department at Justice K. S Hegde Charitable hospital runs on all days of the week including Sundays. OPD timings are from 9.00 AM to 4.30 PM and on Sundays from 9.00 AM to 1.00 PM.

The spacious outpatient Department of 2,500 sq ft consists of:

  • 6 Clinical examination rooms
  • Demonstration room for Undergraduates
  • Side laboratory
  • Minor OT
  • 2 LASER rooms

Speciality Clinics:

The Department runs various speciality clinics. It provides basic and advanced health care services

  • Pertaining to the field.
  • Psoriasis Clinic - Monday, Wednesday, Saturday
  • Pigmentary/Vitiligo Clinic - Tuesday and Friday
  • Contact Dermatitis Clinic - Wednesday
  • Acne Clinic - Thursday
  • Autoimmune/vesicobullous disease Clinic - All Days
  • STD Clinic - All Days
  • Leprosy Clinic - All Days
  • Laser Clinic - All Days

Services provided by the Department:

  • The Department is equipped with state of the art LASER machines to provide cosmetic treatments such as permanent hair reduction, acne scar corrections, keloid treatment, skin resurfacing, removal of pigmented lesion and tattoos.
  • Along with this other dermatological and cosmetic procedures such as biopsies, skin grafting, cryotherapy, electrocautery, radio frequency, chemical peels and skin resurfacing procedures such as derma rolling and microdermabrasion are done.
  • Platelet Rich plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss and wound healing, skin grafting procedures, intralesional injections, various dematosurgeries such as nail and vitiligo surgeries are also done in the Department.
  • Department has specialized treatment techniques like Narrow band UVB phototherapy, PUVA therapy and hand foot phototherapy units.
  • Diagnostic procedures such as Patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis is done here.

Inpatient Department:

The ward section of the Hospital has 40 beds reserved for dermatology inpatient management. Patients requiring admissions and also those undergoing dermato-surgical treatments are admitted and provided necessary care at affordable rates.

community extension activities:

Regular camps and outreach programmes are conducted and deserving

  • Patients get treatment at concessional rates.
  • University has established 20 rural health centers of which 16 are attached with Medical College. These rural centers offer free secondary/ tertiary treatment to the community. Patient requiring advanced treatment are brought to the 1000 bedded teaching Hospital. Interns & PGs are posted for training. Specialist staff provide consultancy at these centers regularly. Staff and Students are encouraged to participate in extension activities organized by the Department:
  • The Department participates in health camps at the rural health centres attached to the Institution.
  • It provides regular health care services at BC Road, Farangipete, Thalipady, Nitte Gajria Hospital, Karkala. Patients are benefited by the participation of the Department in the camps conducted by the Hospital.

Achievements

During the last five years the Department has grown not only in the services provided but also in the number of post graduate students trained. The Department has state of the art Laser equipment to treat a variety of conditions and cosmetic concerns.

Dr. Girisha B S, Professor and head of the department has been invited to contribute to a chapter in IADVL textbook of Dermatology as a coauthor.

The Department of Dermatology along with the Department of Orthopedics and ABSMIDS, jointly host KSHEMA-ICRS STEM CON, a biennial national conference on stem cell based regenerative and cellular medicine. A workshop on Platelet rich plasma and its application in leg ulcer and androgenetic alopecia was conducted by the department.

The department was actively involved in the DERMACON (National conference of IADVL) and DERMAZONE (South zone conference of IADVL) held in Mangaluru in 2015 and 2017, respectively.
