Department of Nephrology
- The department of Nephrology was established in the year 2009 and currently has two full -time consultants with a multidisciplinary team comprising of technicians, nurses, dietician and a dedicated medico-social worker and transplant coordinator, offering high quality renal care to patients with kidney disease. In addition to this, the Department is also actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education as well as education of nursing, pharmacy and allied health services in various aspects of renal medicine.
- The Department is also actively involved in clinical research in collaboration with research institute.
- The goals of the Department include providing optimum level of care to patients with kidney disease.
- Strengths of the Department includes active and deceased donor transplant program and advanced dialysis facility including CRRT (Continues renal replacement therapy)
- Future plans of the department include initiation of peritoneal dialysis services and blood group incompatible kidney transplant program.

The area of clinical research includes following:
- Cardio vascular outcomes in dialysis patient.
- Biomarker of diabetic nephropathy.
- Quality of life in prevalent CKD patients including dialysis patients.
- Acute kidney injury in patients with cardiac surgery.

- Comprehensive hemodialysis facility including intermittent hemodialysis, sustained low efficiency dialysis (SLED), CRRT (Continues renal replacement therapy).
- Membrane based plasma paresis.
- Kidney biopsy.
- Living related, deceased donor and swap kidney transplant.
- Interventional procedures such as tunnelled dialysis catheter insertion.
Achievements
The first Swap Kidney Transplantation of Dakshina Kannada was performed at Justice K.S. Hegde Hospital in December 2016.
